Are Protein Muscle Growth Supplements Healthy?

Protein is considered the building block in all body builders’ diet. Many body builders take protein supplements as muscle growth supplements but you might have a question whether it is healthy to load big amounts of protein.

If you are into the body building sport then you should have heard of high protein diets (HP diets). These diets entail that the individual takes a large amount of protein in his diet. The amount varies among diets and it ranges from 0.6 grams to 1.5 grams of protein for each pound of body weight.

Protein can be found naturally in many forms such as meat, poultry, and dairy products. In addition to these natural sources there are protein supplements which are regarded as the muscle growth supplements. Consuming protein in big amounts can be harmful depending on how you take it.

Addressing the health risks of protein supplements cannot be isolated from the high protein diet as a whole. Bulking on these muscle gain supplements is considered part of this diet.

So what are the health dangers of high protein diets?

First, bulking on protein deprives the individual from essential carbohydrates that are essential to the body. Decreasing the amount of carbohydrates consumed means that you will deprive your body from high fiber sources that is known for fighting many types of diseases including cancer.

Second, increased consumption of red meat and full cream dairy products, which are promoted as good sources of protein, increase the risk of heart disease.

Third, in case you are with liver or kidney problems, protein puts a lot of pressure on the liver and kidneys to remove excess by products as your body metabolizes protein.

Although these risks are alarming to many body builders, the picture should not be that gloomy for those who want to follow a high protein diet. For each of these health risks there is a way to eliminate or decrease it considerably.

You can increase your intake of high fiber carbohydrates to keep a balance in your body between proteins and other nutrients. The increase in muscle supplements should be matched with proportional increase in carbohydrates to reap the benefits of all nutrients.

You can switch from red meat to white meat such as chicken, turkey, or fish to control the risk for heart disease. Moreover, you can switch to low fat or non fat options of dairy products which are becoming more and more popular.

Increasing the intake of protein is essential for body builders. Natural sources are rarely sufficient and protein muscle growth supplements are required to supply the needed amount.

A high protein diet does not have to be dangerous to your health. You just have to be cautious about consuming the right sources of protein and, as with any diet, always consult your physician in case you have health factors.
