Correction and clarification: This story has been updated to reflect the event time of the 2022 Global VegRun.
A new run/walk event is looking to get the community to eat and stay healthy.
The Fo Guang Shan Guam and Blia Guam Chapter is participating in the 2022 Global VegRun 5:30-7:30 a.m. July 9 at Ypao Beach.
The run/walk is a global event organized by the Buddha’s Light International Association, according to John Shen of the organization team. Shen said the event also will promote vegetables that improve a healthy lifestyle and highlight global warming.
“Those are the two agendas that we’re trying to accomplish, to send a message out to the public,” Shen said.
Globally, the run/walk has distances of 3K, 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K. Shen said the local event won’t necessarily follow the global run/walk options.
“Every country, every territory, is going to organize based on what their requirements are,” Shen said. “So the participant is able to choose if they want to do a 2K, 5K, 10K, whatever they like with the time being from six to seven, so one hour. They can do whatever they feel appropriate.”
Shen said the event is open to the public free of charge and that it’s purely for sport.
“We are organizing at Ypao Beach and we encourage walk and run, so children and the elderly are welcome,” Shen said. “So (the event) gets the family together and to realize that vegetables are a really important thing.”
He also said he’s preparing raffle prizes to award to participants. The raffle will be held after the run/walk.
Shen spoke about next year being planned out based on what is accomplished this year.
“Maybe we will be looking into collecting registration fees and donating to charities,” Shen said. “But for the first year, this year, we want to get our message out, get the general public to attend and see what the result will be to determine our future events.”
Shen said the Buddah’s Light International Association also invites the public to visit Fo Guang Shan Temple.
